NIPCO Gas Ltd. reported that an explosion at its refilling station in Benin, Edo State, resulted from a vehicle owner using a substandard Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinder.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the company’s CNG station on Eyean Road, Benin City. Preliminary findings indicate that the explosion happened when a vehicle arrived for CNG refueling.

The installed cylinder, later identified as a fake and substandard, was not designed for CNG.

It exploded after filling with only about 4 SCM of gas.

The driver fled the scene immediately after the explosion. Fortunately, no fatalities occurred, but two individuals sustained injuries—one suffered a leg injury, and another incurred an eye injury.

Medical personnel rushed both victims to the hospital. According to the attending doctor, one individual requires surgery at another facility.

NIPCO’s team is ensuring that the injured receive necessary care. The company has reported the incident to the local police, who have taken custody of the fake cylinder and the vehicle involved.

This event highlights the risks associated with unauthorized CNG installations performed by unqualified technicians using non-compliant cylinders. NIPCO has consistently campaigned against this practice.

“We fully cooperate with the relevant authorities to prevent future incidents and reaffirm our commitment to public safety in all operations,” the company stated.

As a precaution, NIPCO has suspended operations at the affected station to support those impacted by the explosion. The company is steadfast in its mission to provide safe, reliable infrastructure for CNG as an alternative automotive fuel in Nigeria. Safety will remain the top priority in all operations.

NINIPCO Gas Ltd. will continue to uphold the highest industry standards to ensure the well-being of all stakeholders,” the statement added
